Tata Sumo Comeback in 2025: Iconic SUV Set to Return with Bold New Design, Turbo Diesel & 7+ Seating

Tata Motors is reportedly working on bringing back one of its most iconic utility vehicles—the Tata Sumo. Known for its ruggedness, space, and reliability, the Sumo was a staple in both urban and rural India during the late ’90s and 2000s. Now, as part of Tata’s expanding SUV portfolio, the new Tata Sumo 2025 is expected to return with a bolder, modern design, improved safety, and better refinement while retaining its classic utility-focused DNA. It’s aimed at buyers looking for a tough, practical 7- to 9-seater SUV for both family and fleet use.

Boxy, Rugged Styling with a Modern Touch

The new Sumo is expected to feature a tough, muscular body-on-frame design with signature boxy proportions, flat roofline, bold front grille, and high ground clearance—hallmarks of the original model. However, this time it will incorporate modern touches like LED headlamps, DRLs, alloy wheels, black cladding, and a digital infotainment system inside. The cabin will likely offer bench and captain seat layouts with improved comfort, rear AC vents, and USB charging ports, making it versatile for both private and commercial buyers.

Turbo-Diesel Power & Strong Performance

Tata could equip the Sumo with the new-generation 2.0L Kryotec turbo-diesel engine (seen in the Harrier/Safari) in a detuned form, or a newly developed 1.5L turbo-diesel unit for better fuel efficiency and lower cost. The power output is expected to be around 110–130 bhp with 250–300 Nm torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and possibly AMT or torque converter automatic in higher trims. Rear-wheel-drive will be standard, while a 4×4 or terrain mode option could also be considered for rugged terrains.

7+ Seating, Strong Safety & Utility-Oriented Features

With a focus on utility, the Sumo will offer 7-, 8-, and 9-seater configurations, possibly with side-facing jump seats in base variants and front-facing layouts in higher trims. Safety will see a major upgrade with features like 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera. It could also be built on Tata’s Sigma or Gen2 platform, which underpins several of their latest SUVs.

Expected Price and India Launch Timeline

The new Tata Sumo 2025 is expected to be priced between ₹9 lakh and ₹13 lakh (ex-showroom), positioned between the Tata Bolero Neo rivals and lower Safari trims. It could officially launch by late 2025 or early 2026, depending on development timelines. Once launched, it will compete with Mahindra Bolero, Force Gurkha 5-door, and entry-level Scorpio N in the tough, utilitarian SUV segment.
